What is a Design Binding?
A design binding is a piece of art in book form. It is where creative and artistic talent meets the skill and craftsmanship of the professional bookbinder, resulting in a stunning binding which not only reflects and enhances the content of the book itself, but also speaks to you in its own right as artistic expression.
There is a relatively small number of Design Binders in the world who have the skills to create this type of binding, but it is a very active and supportive community encouraging the production of fine bindings through national and international competitions, exhibitions and training programmes. There are collectors of design bindings around the world, but especially in the UK, USA and some areas of Europe.

About Glenn Malkin
I am a full-time professional bookbinder working from my bindery in a small seaside town in East Yorkshire, England. Like most binders, much of my time is spent repairing and re-binding old books and Bibles for clients from all over the world. I also create new bindings for special occasions such as retirements, birthdays and weddings. Click here for more information about book repairs and re-binding.
I have been creating design bindings for about three years. I continue to experiment and play with techniques and approaches that appeal to me, inspired by other binders as well as by the artistic and natural influences that surround us all. Mentored by Paul Delrue, one of the world’s foremost and prolific design binders, I continue to push my own boundaries and develop my own style. My work is often created for one of the several national and international competitions for design bindings and I have achieved notable success in these. My work has been exhibited at a number of galleries and venues, including the V&A Museum in London. I have bindings in private collections and examples of my work are also currently in the USA.
I am happy to take commissions for design bindings from interested collectors or organisations.
